Ocean Commotion

139,000,000 square miles. That’s about the size of our ocean if you summed up the seven seas. Vast is an understatement. Yet for years, people have underestimated their capacity to impact the blue bits of our planet. That’s one reason why we’re in a plastic pollution pickle now.

The truth is no one knows just how big the problem is. But the estimates are alarming. On the low end, 8,000,000 metric tons of plastic winds up in the ocean every year. Some of that washes up onto shores, creating beards of plastic trash on beaches. A lot of it rides the tides and ends up in massive plastic trash patches that could be as large as Texas or Russia.

Straws, grocery bags and wrappers are part of the problem. But there’s an even more insidious culprit: old finish nets, ropes and tackle. Called ghostnets, they have the potential to keep catching marine life long after they became garbage. That’s not all they can become though.

We’ve partnered with a Danish company that collects decommissioned fishing gear from around Europe and recycles it, creating new materials from old nets. We take those raw pellets and build sustainable cases, like WĀKE and FRĒ.*

At LifeProof, we’re from water and for water. We’re serious about doing our part to help heal our oceans, and we know there are more steps we can take. It has to start somewhere, and here’s as good a spot as any.

Your phone and accessories hit all the same spots you do, and often pick up bacteria you aren’t even aware of — like when you set them on a recently sneezed-on table. Frequently cleaning your LifeProof products disarms those unwanted and unseen germs, so you can take the worry out of doing whatever it is you’re doing.
