Pilot survives plane crash in Gulf, films experience on LifeProof iPad

Recently, Theodore Wright contacted us to tell us about his incredible and harrowing plane crash into the Gulf of Mexico.

Theodore and his passenger Raymond Fosdick were flying between Baytown, TX and Sarasota, FL when their engine caught fire and filled the cockpit with smoke. They were forced to make a rapid descent and crash-land into the Gulf of Mexico. Upon escaping from the sinking plane they grabbed flotation devices and Theodore's iPhone and iPad, which were both in LifeProof cases.

As they waited to be rescued, they documented their experience on the iPad. The pair tried to signal a passing fishing boat to no avail, and began to evaluate their options as the Coastguard made several passes overhead but didn't see them.

They had spent over three hours in the water and the sun was beginning to set, when the Coast Guard spotted them and they were winched to safety.

Both Theodore and Raymond are LifeProof fans, using their iPhones and iPads when sailing and flying, for use with maps and navigation apps, as well as to pass the time while waiting to be rescued! You can watch their interview and footage on the TODAY show:

LifeProof is also a sponsor of the Around the World for Life charity, run by Theodore, which provides flights to children with cancer. You can find out more about Around the World for Life here:

    Raymond Fosdick's point of view:

I was traveling from Baytown Texas to Ft Lauderdale with a stop in Sarasota FL.  We were traveling at 11000 feet when a fire broke out.  We had to do an emergency decent with a emergency touchdown in the water southest of the Misssisppi River delta. (About 45 miles out)  We hit the water at 100 knots(115 miles per hour).  We had just mere moments to evacuate the aircraft before it sunk.  We had two iPhones and an iPad all in lifeproof cases.  My lifeproof case took on some damage but still protected my phone from damage.  The iPad did not take on any damage and survivied being submerged for 3 hours while we drifted and waited on the coast guard to show up.  We even took some video of us floating out there with the ipad.  We are lucky to be alive, but we both found it amazing that not only did our phones and iPad survivie the crash but survived being submerged in the gulf of Mexico for prolonged periods of time.

Updated 10-4-2012 - Raymond's father was nice enought to send us this thank you note:

My son, Raymond Fosdick Jr. is the one that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico and was on the Today Show today. I want to thank you very much for having a product that does what it says it will do. My Son had his Iphone in one of your lifeproof cases, in his pocket for three hours while treading water. While we were franticly waiting to hear some word about them after the plane went down, I never dreamed that my call from him would come on his own phone. I was confused how the phone could make it through a plane crash and then a swim in the ocean. So I am now a total believer in your products and as soon as I can get a case for my iphone 5 and my iPad They will both be protected with your products. Thank you so much for having a product that allowed me to hear from my Son, that he was alive and OK.
