WHICH PHONE IS MORE DURABLE, iPHONE 5 OR GALAXY S3?

Date: Apr 22, 2013
Your Ringside Seat for the Battle of the Century.

In this corner, weighing in at 112 grams and wearing the Apple logo, let’s hear it for the Apple iPhone 5. And, in the opposite corner, weighing in at 133 grams and wearing the Samsung logo, welcome the Samsung Galaxy S3! Let’s get ready to rumble!

Apple and Samsung have been going head to head for years now, but their epic corporate battles have been mostly waged in the courtroom. They haven't been crash testing each other’s phones – not publicly at least. That job has been left to interested third parties and here's what they've discovered.

The iPhone 5 wins. Pitting Galaxy vs iPhone in a smartphone death match, Apple is the only device to leave the cage alive. One tester, for example, started out by dropping both phones repeatedly from five to six feet. The screens on the Samsung units shattered much more quickly. The iPhone screen was able to hang in there much better.

One tester noted that the Samsung he dropped landed on its face while the iPhone landed on edge. A follow-up test was conducted where, according to the tester, ‘ordinary household items’ were dropped on both devices. The ordinary household items were a rolling pin and a torch. Again, the iPhone 5 came out the victor. It's good to know that an iPhone 5 is an effective shield against flying rolling pins.

The iPhone 5 has also fared better in water testing, although testers did note problems and degraded functions after immersing the test iPhone 5 in swimming pool water.

Our conclusion: Both of these smartphones are just that – smart. And, both are easily damaged by drops and water. So, if you want a rugged smartphone, keep it in a LifeProof case. With your device protected in one of our cases, you never have to find out for yourself which is more durable, the S3 or iPhone 5.

The tale of the tape:

• Apple tops Samsung in Galaxy vs iPhone durability tests
• The iPhone 5 beats the Galaxy S3 in water immersion testing
• For the ultimate level of protection, use a LifeProof case
