When it’s raining outside, most of us want to be home on the couch sipping coffee. Believe it or not, this is the time you should be outside running. Did you know there are actual benefits to running in the rain? Let us explain:
1. You exercise more muscles – Because you are running on slippery roads in wet conditions, your body overcompensates and you watch your foot placement more carefully, making sure you have better control. While your body is overcompensating, you are using smaller coordinating muscles. This actually contracts the same muscles that are used when doing trail runs.
2. You can put in a more intense workout – You don’t have to worry about heat exhaustion and your body is continually cooled, allowing you to push yourself further. If you have asthma, you will find it is easier to breathe because the rain is washing away some of the effects that cause heavier breathing.
3. You develop physical and mental toughness – Sure, you gain toughness when you are running even in the most perfect conditions, but when you are running in the rain you are forced to stay focused and push through that feeling of wanting to be at home on your couch.
4. You run faster – This is a fact; ask any runner. When running in the rain, you are focused on getting out of the rain rather than how far you’ve actually run. Your sights are set on the finish line and you are able to run at a faster pace.
5. It’s fun and different – If you are used to running when it’s nice outside and it doesn’t rain often, take advantage of the weather. Do something different, channel your inner 5-year-old again and run through those puddles, get a little muddy and enjoy yourself.
We realize that running in the pouring rain isn’t always the safest choice, so be sure to use your best judgement.
